The summer term can feel full-on - early mornings, busy days, late-night revision and probably not enough sleep. With everything going on, it's totally normal for skincare and personal hygiene to take a back seat.
The trouble is, stress, sweat and sunlight can all affect your skin resulting in breakouts, redness and oiliness.
These are my go-to 'clear skin' tips for students that actually make a difference.
1. Cleanse at the End of the Day
A quick cleanse in the evening makes such a difference. It gets rid of the day's build up - oil, sweat and impurities, whatever your skin's picked up in lessons, sport or just being out and about.
Bonus tip: If you’ve just done PE or gone to the gym, wash your face and moisturise as soon as you can. Sweat sitting on your skin can eventually clog pores.
2. Use Moisturiser (even if you’ve got acne)
One of the biggest myths is that moisturiser causes spots. Not true.
When your skin’s dry, it tries to overcompensate by producing more oil, which leads to more breakouts. A lightweight, oil-free moisturiser helps keep your skin barrier happy and balanced, especially after cleansing.
3. Spots
Using a targeted product with salicylic acid or lactic acid can really help tackle breakouts. However, more isn’t always better as overusing spot products can irritate your skin and make things worse.
Instead, apply directly onto blemishes (not all over your face) once to three times a day, after cleansing and before moisturising. Stick with it, clear skin is all about patience and consistency, not quick fixes.
Hydrocolloid Patches can really help. You can read about how to pick the right ones here
4. Keep Hands off your Face
Picking spots is tempting but touching your face transfers bacteria and oil to your skin.
Wipe your phone regularly and try not to lean on your head in your hand in class. It’s small changes that can make a big difference.
5. Sleep, Stress and Skin
When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which in turn can trigger breakouts. Add in a few late nights and snacks instead of meals and your skin will suffer.
Try stepping away from your screen, taking a breath outside, or just giving yourself a proper break. Skincare doesn’t have to be perfect – sometimes, rest is the best thing you can give your skin (and yourself).
Top Tips
- Clean your phone screen
- Wash your hands regularly
- Change your pillow case at least every week
- Use a flannel to gently wash your face
- Always use Moisturiser
- Be gentle with yourself and your skin
- Use Hydrocolloid patches at night
Clear skin isn’t about doing everything perfectly – it’s about finding what works for you, being consistent and not being too hard on yourself.
With a little knowledge, a few small changes and the right habits, clear skin is within your reach.
